Regional firmware, explained simply
Every Canon ships with firmware for the market it’s sold in. That firmware decides which menu languages you see, and sometimes which video system ( or ) you can pick. If your camera came from Japan, the short Language menu is usually the first thing you notice.
What regional firmware means
Canon uses different firmware settings for different markets. A camera for Japan may show only Japanese and English; the same model sold in Europe adds French, German, Spanish and many more. It’s all software — there’s no hidden switch. Grey importers move cameras between countries without touching the firmware, so a camera bought in London or Dubai can still have the Japanese menu.
Menu languages vs
The language list and the video system are separate settings, even though both come from the regional firmware. A camera from Japan is usually set up for , which matters if you shoot 25p or 50p for a country. On supported models we can unlock in the same session as the languages — just mention it when you ask for the free check.
Signs your camera has the Japanese menu
Only two languages in the list, your own language missing, a box or warranty card in Japanese, or a listing that said “Japan version”. For comparison, the same models sold in Europe or the US have between 25 and 32 languages, depending on the model. The serial number and the label on the box can also hint at where the camera was meant to be sold.

Canon service centres generally won’t change the language list on a camera made for Japan. MenuLang Unlock is an independent service, not affiliated with Canon, that adds the missing languages on supported models.
