JDM vs international Canon firmware
JDM Canon cameras are made for Japan’s domestic market. International variants ship to Europe, Americas, and Asia with broader language menus. Grey-import blurs the line — buyers get JDM hardware with restricted languages outside Japan.

What is JDM (Japanese Domestic Market)?
JDM means the camera was intended for sale in Japan: packaging in Japanese, warranties via Japanese distributors, and firmware tuned for that market. Parallel importers ship JDM bodies to Israel, Germany, Australia, and elsewhere at lower prices — often without warning that the Language menu is limited to English and Japanese.
Language menu: JDM vs EU/US firmware
International firmware typically lists 30 languages including Hebrew, Arabic, French, German, and Korean. JDM firmware on the same model name may show only two. The hardware is often identical; the difference is which language entries the firmware exposes. That is why a G7 X Mark III from Bic Camera behaves differently from one bought at a European retailer.
Grey-import buying risks
Beyond language, grey-import may mean no local warranty, mismatched chargers, and firmware updates that preserve region locks. Before buying, ask the seller about Language menu options. After purchase, if languages are missing, check compatibility for unlock rather than assuming the camera is faulty.
When language unlock makes sense
If you already own a JDM or grey-import body and need Hebrew, German, or English restored, unlock is faster than reselling and rebuying. MenuLang Unlock supports 67+ Canon models — contact us with model, firmware, and import type for confirmation.
FAQ
How do I tell if my Canon is JDM?+
Clues include Japanese packaging, “JP” region labels, seller listing “Japan version”, and only English/Japanese in Language settings. Serial number and firmware screens help — send photos via our contact form.
Is JDM image quality different?+
Sensor and lens performance are the same model-to-model. Differences are firmware features and menu languages, not optics.
Can firmware update remove region lock?+
Official Canon updates rarely expand language lists on JDM bodies. Unlock is often the practical fix on supported models.
