Firmware updates and menu languages

Firmware updates fix bugs and add features, but on some models they bring back the original language list. A little planning before you press “Update” saves trouble later.

Before you update

Write down your current firmware version and take a photo of the Language menu. If we’ve set up your camera recently, email us first — we’ll tell you whether to stay on your current version or go ahead with the update.

After an official update

Some cameras keep the added languages after an update; others go back to the list they came with. It depends on the model and firmware.

If the languages disappear

Send us your firmware version from before and after the update. We’ll check for free whether we can add the languages again on the new version.

Sony vs Canon

On both brands, the language list is tied to the camera’s regional settings. The rule is the same for either: check with us before updating, and keep a note of what changed.

Frequently asked questions

Can an update damage my camera?+

Official Canon and Sony updates are designed to be installed by users — use a fully charged battery and the official file from the manufacturer’s website. That’s separate from our setup; if you’re unsure, ask us.

Should I never update the firmware again?+

Not at all — just ask us first. For many models an update is fine; for some it resets the language list.
